GW Architectural were commissioned to carry out an initial feasibility study of the site with a view to providing a high quality and visually striking student accommodation building on this prominent site within the City of Durham.
Working closely with the local planning authority and managing the design team, GWA conducted two rounds of pre-application work before making a final planning submission and receiving planning permission from Durham County Council in January 2022. Final technical information is currently being prepared with works expected to begin on site in late 2022.

Working with a challenging site occupied mostly by single storey dwellings, GWA were tasked with providing 3 bespoke properties that complimented the surrounding low-rise properties.
An unusual, elongated form was required to ensure the eaves level remained low at the boundaries and included adequate distance to preserve privacy. The T-shaped layout helped provide secluded gardens that could be overlooked from private bedroom balconies as well as glazed family spaces on the ground floor.

A remodelling project for a private property in Kirklevington, our brief was to create additional bedrooms and living space for an ultra-modern look.
The design takes inspiration from the original building whilst using advancements in glazing to emphasise an indoor / outdoor connection and harnesses solar heating as part of an environmental strategy.
We used hi-tech solutions and material improvements to reduce and control the building's environmental impact and support the client's lifestyle.

GWA were appointed to design a new build on vacant land at Burnside cottages.
The property is a room in roof build with a detached garage. It has a centralised entrance and feature stairs with a half landing, providing views out over the garden and Stockfield Burn. The property consists of two main rooms, a private lounge area and an open plan kitchen diner. The first floor roof plan comprises of a master bedroom with two additional bedrooms.

The existing property is a detached 2 storey dwelling house with access road to the front and surrounding garden area.
The job involved revising the overall master plan and adding an orangery, a triple garage with a flat above and an office extension with dual pitched roof.All additions are in keeping with the existing farmhouse in terms of material and scale.

We were commissioned to design a proposed extension to the existing kitchen and provide additional utility space, whilst re-establishing the rear facade.
The proposed kitchen was extended by introducing a section of open and over glazing opening out onto a terrace and replacing the existing living room doors so that the spaces can open into one another. The utility area is formed at a lower level using timber clad walls and a single ply roof system with a panoramic corner window.
